When Love Has an Expiration Date: Inside 7 Anniversari (7 Anniversaries)

What if you could enter a relationship with a pre-set expiration date, completely bypassing the agonizing terror of sudden heartbreak? This is the provocative premise at the heart of 7 Anniversari (7 Anniversaries), an intimate Italian drama directed by Sabrina Iannucci in her compelling feature film debut.

Premiering in the Freestyle section of the Rome Film Fest, the movie stars Benedetta Porcaroli as Emma and Lorenzo Zurzolo as Teo, two young people navigating modern romance under a set of rules entirely their own.

The Premise: A Contract for Intimacy

At its core, 7 Anniversari explores a radically unconventional relationship contract. Emma is deeply terrified of commitment, vulnerability, and the inevitable pain that follows when romantic bonds fracture. Enter Teo—a free-spirited creative rider who resists conventional relationship milestones.

Instead of pushing Emma into a traditional, open-ended romance, Teo proposes an unusual bargain: a relationship built to last for exactly seven years.

The logic of the pact is deceptively simple. By establishing a fixed deadline from day one, both partners know precisely when the story will end. There are no sudden breakups, no ghosting, and no slow, agonizing drifts into resentment. Theoretically, it removes the safety hazard of fear, transforming commitment into a finite, manageable agreement. But the film’s narrative engine drives directly into the flaw of this human experiment: Can you neatly compartmentalize genuine emotions within a countdown?

A Portrait of Modern Vulnerability

Set against the scenic urban backdrop of Cuneo, Italy, the film trades high melodrama for quiet, observational intensity. The cinematography by Vito Frangione captures the ordinary textures of daily life, emphasizing how extraordinary emotional stakes can hide inside mundane routines.

Porcaroli brings a sharp, guarded intelligence to Emma, a voice performer whose outward composure is constantly challenged by the deepening bonds she tries to rationalise away. Meanwhile, Zurzolo’s Teo balances an effortless charm with an ambiguous depth—leaving the audience questioning whether his rules are a shield for his own fears or a genuine gift to Emma’s peace of mind.
