When thinking about paper formats, standard office choices like A4 (for documents) or A3 (for posters) usually steal the spotlight. However, nestled deep within the ISO 216 paper size system is a much smaller, highly practical dimension: Format A8.
Despite its compact scale, the A8 paper format plays a vital role in day-to-day print products, event organization, retail branding, and personal organization.
What is Format A8?
Format A8 is part of the standardized A-series paper sizes defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 216). Like all sizes in this series, A8 maintains an aspect ratio of 1:√2 (approximately 1:1.414). This unique aspect ratio allows paper to be repeatedly halved without altering its proportions.
To put its size into perspective:
- Halving an A0 sheet 8 times yields an A8 sheet.
- An A4 page—the common standard for home printers—can be divided into exactly 16 A8 sheets.

Everyday Applications of A8
Due to its portable size—roughly comparable to a standard credit card (which is 85.6 × 53.9 mm)—the A8 format is widely used in commercial printing and stationery:
