Long before he was crowned the undisputed “Son of Netflix” and captivating global audiences in smash hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a young man navigating uncertainty, artistic influences, and a quiet determination to find his path.
An Artistic Upbringing and Early Ambitions
Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song grew up in a household deeply immersed in the arts. His father was an artistic gymnast, and his mother worked as a piano teacher. Surrounded by creativity, Song spent his formative years exploring different interests—ranging from sports to music—though he wasn’t entirely sure where his future lay.
As a student at Changhyun High School and later as a Film Arts major at Konkuk University, Song developed a profound appreciation for cinema. He has often cited Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio as a major inspiration who sparked his initial dream of standing in front of the camera.
The Road Not Taken: Rejecting Idol Scouting
With his striking visuals, towering 186 cm (6’1″) frame, and natural charm, it was no surprise that the entertainment industry came knocking early on. During his pre-debut days and university years, Song was approached multiple times by various talent agencies hoping to train him as a K-pop idol.
However, Song politely turned down these offers. True to his humble and self-aware nature, he later admitted that he didn’t feel confident in his singing or dancing abilities. His heart was set firmly on acting, a craft he wanted to master properly rather than rushing into the spotlight through an idol route.
Stepping Into the Craft
Transitioning into acting wasn’t an overnight fairy tale; it required stepping out of his comfort zone. Song has candidly shared memories of his early days at an acting academy, where performing in front of peers initially made him so shy that he couldn’t stop laughing out of nervousness. Plagued by self-doubt after class, he wrestled with whether he had what it took. Instead of giving up, he leaned into the challenge, sharpening his focus and studying film arts at Konkuk University to build a solid technical foundation.
His perseverance paid off in December 2016 when he officially signed with Namoo Actors, a reputable agency known for managing top-tier cinematic talent. This milestone set the stage for his professional debut in 2017, when he stepped onto the small screen as supporting character Baek Jin-woo in the tvN series The Liar and His Lover.
While his early pre-debut years were defined by quiet persistence, hesitation, and deliberate choices, they laid the groundwork for the powerhouse actor he would soon become—proving that Song Kang’s journey was built as much on grit as it was on natural star quality.
