Power to the Edge: Unlocking AI with the Hailo-8L NPU

Artificial Intelligence is no longer confined to massive server farms and power-hungry cloud data centers. Today, some of the most exciting innovations are happening at the “edge”—directly on compact, local devices like security cameras, smart home hubs, and single-board computers.

Driving this shift is a new class of specialized hardware, and standing out at the forefront of entry-level edge AI is the Hailo-8L Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Offering a remarkable balance of performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, the Hailo-8L is changing what creators, developers, and engineers can achieve on small form-factor devices.

What Makes the Hailo-8L Special?

The Hailo-8L is an entry-level AI accelerator designed to deliver up to 13 Tera-Operations Per Second (TOPS). While its bigger sibling, the full-fat Hailo-8, pushes 26 TOPS, the 8L variant is purposefully engineered to bring high-performance neural network inference to power-constrained and cost-sensitive applications.

Several standout engineering choices define its architecture:

  • DRAM-Free Design: Unlike many traditional processors that require external memory chips, the Hailo-8L features fully integrated on-chip memory. This drastically reduces system complexity, shrinks physical footprints, lowers Bill of Materials (BoM) costs, and shields supply chains from external memory shortages.
  • Exceptional Power Efficiency: Delivering high TOPS is impressive, but doing so efficiently is what matters most for edge devices. The Hailo-8L typically consumes around 1.5 watts, making it ideal for battery-operated or thermally limited environments.
  • Dataflow Architecture: Instead of a traditional von Neumann architecture, Hailo chips utilize a proprietary structure-driven dataflow architecture. This allows data to flow directly between processing elements with minimal overhead, maximizing hardware utilization and drastically cutting down latency.

Bringing Supercharged AI to Everyday Hardware

One of the most popular integrations of the Hailo-8L is its presence in the Raspberry Pi AI ecosystem (such as through official AI HATs and kits for the Raspberry Pi 5).

By pairing a standard single-board computer with a 13 TOPS Hailo-8L module over a PCIe connection, hobbyists and industrial designers suddenly have access to capabilities previously reserved for dedicated graphics cards or expensive development boards.
