From Bedroom Studio to Spotify: How to Put Your Own Music on the Map

Ever listened to your favorite track on Spotify and thought, “I want my own song on here”? Whether you produce beats on your phone, write acoustic indie tunes in your bedroom, or mix vocals over tracks, sharing your music with the world is easier than ever.

Spotify doesn’t let artists upload songs directly, but the path from an audio file on your computer to a verified release on a global streaming platform is straightforward once you know the steps.

Step 1: Finish and Export Your Master Track

Before anything else, your song needs to be fully written, recorded, mixed, and mastered. When you export your final audio file, aim for the highest quality possible:

  • Audio Format: Export as a WAV or FLAC file (at least 16-bit/44.1 kHz). Avoid using compressed MP3 files for distribution, as streaming platforms require high-resolution master audio.
  • Cover Art: You’ll need a square image to represent your release (minimum 3000 x 3000 pixels in JPEG or PNG format). Make sure it’s original, eye-catching, and doesn’t feature unauthorized copyrighted logos or internet memes.

Step 2: Choose a Music Distributor

Because Spotify doesn’t take direct uploads from individual artists, you use a digital music distributor. Distributors act as the bridge between you and streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

Popular independent options include services like DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, and Amuse. They differ in pricing models—some charge an annual subscription fee for unlimited uploads, while others take a small commission or a one-time fee per release. Research which model fits your budget best.

Step 3: Upload and Add Your Metadata

Once you pick a distributor, create your account and start a new release. You’ll be asked to fill out your metadata (the data that tells platforms who made the song and what it’s called):

  • Track Title & Artist Name: Double-check your spelling! Fixing typos after a song is live can be a slow headache.
  • ISRC Codes: This is a unique tracking code for your sound recording. Most distributors will generate one for you automatically for free.
  • Credits: Properly credit songwriters, producers, and featured artists so everyone gets recognized correctly.

Step 4: Plan a Strategic Release Date

Do not set your release date for tomorrow! It typically takes a distributor anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to process and deliver your music to Spotify.
