From a Quiet Italian Village to the Global Stage: The Early Years of Sonia Gandhi
Long before she became one of the most influential figures in Indian politics, Sonia Gandhi’s story began far away from the bustling political arenas of New Delhi. Born as Edvige Antonia Albina Maino on December 9, 1946, she grew up in a traditional, close-knit family in Lusiana, a small village in the Veneto region of Italy, and later spent her youth in Orbassano, near Turin.
Growing up in post-war Europe, her early life was grounded in a modest, working-class environment. Raised by her parents, Stefano and Paola Maino, she attended local Catholic schools and experienced a childhood focused primarily on family, education, and local community life. At this point in her life, India—a country whose history would eventually become deeply intertwined with her own—was entirely outside her lived reality.
The Fateful Move to Cambridge
As a young adult with aspirations of mastering foreign languages and broadening her horizons, Sonia moved to England in 1964. She enrolled at the Bell Educational Trust’s language school in Cambridge to study English.
It was during this modest student chapter that her life took an unexpected turn. While working part-time to support her studies—including working at a local restaurant—she crossed paths with a young engineering student named Rajiv Gandhi, who was attending Trinity College at the University of Cambridge and belonged to one of India’s most prominent political families.
What began as a chance encounter blossomed into a deep romance. Despite coming from completely different cultural backgrounds—one rooted in rural Italy and the other in the heart of Indian political royalty—the pair formed a strong bond.
Stepping Into a New World
After a few years of courtship, Sonia and Rajiv married in 1968, marking a profound turning point for the young Italian-born woman. She moved to New Delhi to live with Rajiv’s family, entering a household that was at the center of the nation’s governance (her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, was the Prime Minister of India).
