Johannes Pietsch: The Rising Star Blending Pop and Opera
Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter who captured international attention by winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Known for his breathtaking vocal range and a unique style that bridges classical opera with modern pop, Pietsch has quickly become one of the most exciting young talents in contemporary European music.
Early Life and Global Roots
Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch comes from a diverse multicultural background, with an Austrian father and a Filipino mother. He spent a significant portion of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
This multicultural upbringing exposed him to a wide array of musical influences. At home, family karaoke parties introduced him to mainstream pop, while his father fostered a deep appreciation for classical music and opera. When his family moved back to Vienna in 2016, Pietsch pursued his passion seriously, eventually attending the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera and the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
Before his major breakthrough, Pietsch tested his talents on various television singing competitions:
- The Voice UK (2020): After missing the deadline for the German edition, he traveled to the UK, successfully advancing to the Knockouts under the mentorship of will.i.am.
- Starmania (2021): He competed in the fifth season of the popular Austrian television music show, reaching the first final show.
These early television experiences helped shape his stage presence, setting the stage for his monumental career leap in 2025.
Eurovision Triumph with “Wasted Love”
In January 2025, Austrian broadcaster ORF announced that Pietsch—performing under the mononym JJ—would represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Wasted Love”. Co-written by Pietsch alongside producer Thomas Thurner and former Austrian Eurovision representative Teodora Špirić, the track was a striking showcase of his signature pop-opera fusion.
On May 17, 2025, JJ triumphed in the grand final, securing a total of 436 points (dominating the jury vote and performing strongly with the televote). His victory marked several historic milestones:
- He became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent.
- He earned the distinction of being the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.
Musical Style and Legacy
As a sopranist (a male soprano or high countertenor type), Pietsch possesses a remarkable vocal range that effortlessly scales soaring operatic heights while maintaining a contemporary pop groove. His ability to blend theatrical intensity with catchy melodies has carved out a distinct lane for him in the modern music industry.
Following his Eurovision win, Pietsch has continued to expand his discography, releasing new music and embarking on tours to connect with a rapidly growing global fanbase.
